Overview: Nikhil Arora and Alejandro Velez are graduates from UC Berkeley who used what they learned in the classroom to create a distinctive small business. As part of ConnectED's "Day at Work" series, Nikhil and Alejandro talk about the importance of being willing to work hard for what you believe in.
Description: An entrepreneur is an owner or manager of a business enterprise who makes money through risk and initiative. Most successful entrepreneurial endeavors begin with a unique and creative idea.
Knowledge Required: Knowledge of business administration, accounting, and marketing is valuable for starting up a new business. Additional knowledge required depends on the type of business or product being developed.
Skills: Customer service, communication, problem-solving time management, teamwork, critical thinking, innovation, business management, sales and marketing
Career Path: Although a postsecondary education is not required to start your own business, classes in business, marketing, and communication are recommended. A graduate or undergraduate degree in business and/or marketing can provide the required knowledge.
Best Cities for this Job: Metropolitan areas such as New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles

As part of ConnectED's "Day at Work" series, Shannon reveals how her passion for baking emerged and Florian talks about what it takes to market a small business.

Day at Work: Wine Maker


Description: A wine maker produces, bottles, and markets wine. Some winemakers grow their own grapes while others buy theirs from a vineyard.
Knowledge Required: Agriculture, chemistry, biology, mathematics, marketing, ecology
Skills: Wine making requires a combination of physical activity and scientific understanding. It requires the ability to operate machinery and deal with problems that arise. Being able to sell wine requires creativity in marketing and people skills.
Career Path: UC Davis and CSU Fresno offer degrees in fermentation science. Many junior colleges near wine regions offer two year degrees in winemaking. Becoming an apprentice or helping out at a winery is an important first step in becoming a wine maker. Vineyards require a large initial investment and it takes a few years to pay off.
Best Cities for this Job: The best cities for the job are ones located in regions known for winemaking such as the Napa Valley, Oregon, and Washington.
