My wife and I alternate Sunday afternoons with our two grandchildren. One Sunday, Marissa age 8, visits with us. The next Sunday, Tyler age 4 is here. We visit, play games, build stuff, do puzzles, cook, do goofy things, and just enjoy each other. We’re so pleased that they each fight over whose turn it is to come.
Last Sunday, it was Tyler’s turn. We were sitting at the dining table while he was enjoying a bowl of chocolate ice cream, and I decided this would be a good time to teach him the days of the week—Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, etc. Didn’t take long to see, he seemed to know these pretty well. So, to be sure, I asked him: “Tyler, what comes after Sunday?” He replied:
“Tomorrow.”
I laughed. Not the answer I was expecting, but, of course, he was right. And in many ways, his answer was even better than the expected one. What comes after Sunday? Not just Monday but a host of tomorrows, with the possibility of endless new days.
As we emerge from all of the trauma of COVID, and we still have a long way to go, I hope we can stay focused on a better tomorrow. This school year is coming to a close, and we wish everyone a rejuvenating summer. Let’s return “tomorrow” more committed than ever to better preparing all students for lasting success in college and career.
